A library card is the cheapest, most generous membership most of us own, and many people never use half of it. This is not a sales pitch. Nobody here earns a cent when you borrow a book.

Ask for what they do not have

Most libraries will request a book from another branch or another library system for you, often at no cost. If a title is missing, ask. Some libraries also let you suggest that they buy it.

Borrow digitally

Many libraries offer e-books and audiobooks through free apps, using the same card. Waiting lists can be long, so place a hold on a few titles at once and read whichever arrives first.

Try before you buy

If you love a borrowed book, buying your own copy later is a lovely thing to do. If you do not, you lost nothing but a little shelf space on your phone.

Use the people

Librarians are some of the best book matchmakers in the world. Walk up and say what you last loved. You will be surprised.

That is also why we always suggest checking your library first. We would rather you finish a good book than own one you did not open.
